This is a fork and continuation of the mod Animal Armor: Vanilla, as the original author was looking to pass the lead of this project onto someone else.

Using the Animal Gear framework, this mod allows you to research, craft, and outfit your tamed animals with warm clothes and protective battle armor across all tech levels.

Changes in this fork

  • Optimized the texture loading so that only relevant textures load. This brings the mod's memory footprint down from 375MB to about 3MB for most users.
  • Placeholder textures no longer needed.
  • Added an option to remove placeholder armors from the game, meaning that you can only craft and use armors that actually have finished art.
  • Armor descriptions now have hyperlink lists showing which animals it supports.
  • Split the armors into small and large sizes. Any critter larger than body size 1 uses the large variant, which cost more to craft.
  • Locked the armors behind their own research projects.
  • The bridles now give a modest 10% move bonus, ideal for users of Giddy Up.

FAQ

Q. How to I get animals to equip things?
A. Technically, it uses the same system that pawns use to pick out and equip their own gear, which is as follows:

  1. Craft the item, and check the item's info card to see if the animal is listed as being supported.
  2. Store the equipment in a storage zone.
  3. Ensure the animal is allowed to reach the storage zone.
  4. Configure the animal's outfit the same way you would a pawn.
  5. The animal will go equip their armor within the next few hours.

Q. What is universal/placeholder armor?
A. This is equipment that can be worn by any animal, but lacks any custom art, so it's invisible. You can disable this feature in mod options, under the Vanilla Expanded Framework section.

Q. The bridle isn't working
A. At the moment the bridle only supports the thrumbo and spelopedes. As usual, you can check the item details for a list of supported animals.

As for other animal mods, all of them should be able to wear the invisible placeholder armors. Should art be made for their armor in the future, the framework will switch their armor over automatically next load.
