Based on the Villar Perosa from WW1,the Beretta M38 was a cheap, reliable, accurate and durable gun that's generally regarded as the best Italian weapon of the war, and is an strong contender for the best smg of WW2.
Until 1943 it's use was only by elite units, but after the German occupation of Italy and the creating of the ISR it's use became widespread between regular units of the Italian army, and also of the Germans, who produced them in their own country in 1944 and 1945. It was also used by Yugoslav and Albanian partisans, and a batch of the guns was sent to Japan as one of the inspirations for their own Type 100 smg (It's likely some of those guns saw action)
