Designed for the French handgun trials of the late 19th century, the Clair pistol was made by three brothers who created a supposedly "universal" gas system. It lost against the Lebel revolver due to reliability issues mainly, a very common issue with early automatic pistols. In the end, only about 20 or so were made, with all being lost to time. It seems to be unknown if they were ever sold to individuals or just stored and eventually lost.
