Falcon Armoury: Black Rabbit II ATGM

The Black Rabbit series of ATGMs were developed to fulfill the 500+ Metre range gap left by normal anti-tank weapons from the Royal Falcon Army Corps. Budget cuts had reduced the amount of tanks and self-propelled AT weapons fielded by the army that could take out enemy armour outside the range of normal anti-tank rockets carrier by the infantry. The Black Rabbit I and II systems were MCLOS (Manually COntrolled Line Of Sight) systems in which the operator had to guide the rocket on to the target with a joystick, using only the Mk. 1 Eyeball to do so. This meant that, as the operator had to track the missile and the target, the weapon was only effective against large and slow targets, such as tanks and transport vehicles and perhaps the odd building. First scout bikes and ATVs, as well as helicopters were very hard to hit, however it was done on several occasions.
Where the Black Rabbit I was launched from a stand a few metres away from the controller, the Black Rabbit II was a shoulder launched system. Each rocket canister contained a spool for the command wire located on the top, which slotted in to a control system from the main body of the launcher. The back blast was also aimed upwards, allowing for the weapon to be used prone, or in more urban environments more safely. Anti-tank teams found it reasonably effective, however its accuracy was noticeably reduced at 1800+ metres as it was difficult for the operator to sight the missile. The follow up systems introduced many years later converted the system into a SACLOS, with a sighting unit making the job much easier for the operator, and increasing the operator.
