During the Spanish-American war of 1898,the US encountered that modern bolt action rifles were able to hold massive amounts of US troops while outnumbered; thus, after the war, the US governement started to invest on a modern design to replace the old infantry rifles of the army. This rifle became the M1903,which was used in WW1.
At the start of WW2,the American army ordered more rifles for the re-equipping forces. The main difference with the old model was a new rear sight, and different tooling for easier production.
This rifle, the M1903A3,was used in all fronts America was part of, specially the Pacific (as the marines originally did not have M1 Garands), and by US Rangers, as the bolt action rifles were better for some situations.
There was also an sniper variant, the M1903A4.
