Designed to fill the role of assault weapon for trench warfare, the MP18 was (depending on the source) the first submachine gun to ever be used in combat. During WW1 it had a major role in the Spring Offensive. It was one of the first weapons developed with the intent of using cheap spot welding and pressed sheet metal for mass production, although this never took place during the war. The MP18/I was still used after the war, being exported to many nations, and illegally copied in several countries. By WW2, most were already out of service, but it was still used in China, and it seems some of the submachine guns owned by Germany may have been issued to rear units late in the war.
