Originally created after the discovery that the 6.5mm cartgride was underpowered compared to the 7.7 used on Japanese fixed machine guns, this weapon began as a conversion for the Type 38. The Type 99 however, was redesigned from the ground up to be a much sturdier and reliable weapon, and even the late war production rifles were relatively good. It gained a bad reputation when mainly American soldiers captured training versions of the Type99,identical except for the fact that it was made to fire way less powerful rounds with wooden tip.
