Designed for the 1935-37 competition for a new pistol in the French army, the 1935A was essentially an M1911 chambered in 7.65 long and with slightly improved reliability. It won the trials along with a similar gun (Model A), and it entered mass production in 1937. By 1939,the French army had about 2000 pistols, and after the liberation, a further 7000 pistols were produced in 1944 and 1945
