Designed in 1941 to be one of the new simplified Soviet anti tank rifles, Simonov's anti tank rifle was a gas operated semi automated rifle. It was more complex than the PTRD, and thus harder to manufacture, being produced in smaller numbers. It was, nontheless, the second most used anti tank rifle of the Soviet army in WW2. In 1943, Simonov scaled down the action of the rifle and began working on what would later become the SKS.
