Originally beginning as an attempt to copy the KbWz35s captured during the invasion of Poland, the PTRD,"Degtyaryov Single Shot Anti-Tank Weapon System Model of 1941" was the most widely available infantry anti tank weapon of the Soviet Army during the German invasion. It was the most produced anti tank rifle of the Soviet Union, and probably of the whole war, with about half a million made. They were reliable and effective, specially against medium and light armor, and transport vehicles. The Germans started to develop the Panther II as a way to counter this weapon (It could penetrate the sides of a Panther),but they figured it would be easier to just add side skirts to reduce the penetration power of the heavy 14.5mm round
