The M55 Reising was designed to be an opponent of the Thompson for use of paratroopers and marines, being a lighter, cheaper and easier to handle gun. It had an unusual underside loading handle, used by introducing the fingers under the front part of the stock.
While the gun never replaced the Thompson, some were bought by the Marines, who used them most notably during the battle of Guadalcanal.
