Developed as a means to make the MG08 more mobile, the MG08/15 was a lighter, more transportable version easier to deploy in the frontline. It also saw use by assault units, who carried it on the hip to quickly deploy it in battle supposedly. It saw much use in the second half of WW1, and after the war, the gun was exported to many nations, ending up in wars like the Polish-Soviet war, the Spanish Civil War, and WW2, where it was used by Germany in some numbers as they didn't have enough MG34s (and later on 42s) for the whole army
